MONUC and the Mayhem in DR Congo

19 Nov

“The [United Nations Security Council] will eventually come around to supporting the increase but it will take some time.”

Atoki Ileka, DR Congolese Ambassador to the U.N.

Turmoil and unrest have long been present in Democratic Republic of the Congo, but recent news merits discussion by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).

Rebels announced Tuesday they would withdraw from two fronts to give peace a “new chance” in strife-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as government forces faced new charges of looting. While the rebels said they would pull back, they continued their siege outside the city of 500,000 people.

How does this recent development affect the current UN peacekeeping mission in DR Congo? Join at 7pm on Wednesday 11/19 in CAS 326 for the chance to represent a country with vested interests in this situation.
