A Year from the US Presidential Elections

Happy Halloween!

We hope you had a spooky weekend! Mark your calendars, because we have a lot in store this week.

This Week

Please join us this Wednesday in CAS222 at 7:30 to discuss A Year from the United States Presidential Elections.

For the first three years of his Presidency, Barack Obama has made countless foreign policy decisions. From his negotiations with Israel and Palestine to his reaction to the Arab Spring, President Obama has faced both praise and scorn from both sides of the aisle. Some have viewed him as too soft, allowing other countries to proceed without American intervention, while others have seen him as going against his promises in 2008 to be different than his predecessor. The primary challengers to President Obama’s foreign policy choices have been Herman Cain, Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul. While the other candidates have foreign policy opinions, they haven’t been specific on their standings and simply speak against the actions of Obama. Mitt Romney has rather clearly defined foreign policy objectives, Ron Paul stands by his libertarian ideals in foreign policy, and Herman Cain – despite being the current front-runner – has had some interesting answers in the realm of foreign policy.

With a hotly contested presidential election only one year away, opponents on the right are directly attacking many of the President’s decisions while laying the foundation for their own policy preferences. With foreign policy becoming an increasingly important issue with the overthrowing of Libyan dictators and potential Palestinian statehood, the American people will increasingly question the Commander in Chief’s global strategy. 2012 will present a chance for the American people to dictate how America will be viewed on the world stage for years to come.
