Panel on Law and Microfinance

Microfinance is one of the most important areas for poverty alleviation and capacity building in developing countries. Working in microfinance affords lawyers the opportunity to engage directly with the financial institutions, government policymakers and regulators, and other actors—including low-income clients themselves—who are concerned about building inclusive financial systems. Please join the Office of Public Interest Advising and the Harvard Law and International Development Society for a panel discussion focused on the effect of legal institutions and frameworks on the foundation, operation, and ultimate success of microfinance initiatives. The Anti-Corruption Movement in India: Lessons for Civil Society and NGOs

Dr. Balasubramaniam (Balu) is a development activist, social innovator and leadership trainer. At the age of 19, Balu founded the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, based on the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Seva (service) and Tyaga (sacrifice) and, over the past 27 years, has built the organization into one of India’s leading development NGOs.  He has been greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, the great Indian monk who lived in the 19th century.  After getting his degree in medicine, Balu earned his M.Phil in Hospital and Health Systems Management. He has an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School.  Balu is a close associate of anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare and has been leading the anti-corruption movement in the state of Karnataka.

 

Geopolitics of Internet Infrastructure

James Cowie, Renesys Corporation. The growth of the global Internet is still determined, in large part, by local factors: geography, politics, and the economics of interconnection and competition.    We’ll examine the paths along which Internet traffic flows, focusing on the emerging markets of the Middle East and Central Asia.   We’ll discuss ways in which the evolution of these paths dictates the choices available to information consumers, and the costs they must pay to interconnect with global information markets.    A lot is at stake, as the countries that emerge as Middle Eastern regional transit hubs will play a significant role in the evolution of the region’s post-oil information economy
