Merhaba BUIAA!
November is in full swing, and before we know it, it’ll be time for Thanksgiving!
This Week
Please join us this Wednesday in CAS222 at 7:30 to discuss Turkey’s New Global Vision.
As the power balance in Middle East continues to shift, an old actor emerges as a lighthouse in turbulent waters. After assuming a backseat in the international scene following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey is rising again as both a political and economic power.
Having undergone a financial crisis in 2001, Turkey has restructured its banking and financial system. These reforms accompanied by a liberal and free market approach has lead to an economic boost that Turkey enjoys today. With economic stability came a tremendous military revision that now allows Turkey to have the second biggest standing army in NATO, an interesting fact considering its tense relations with the West today.Europe
Turkey’s longstanding issues with Europe–and to a much lesser degree with the United States–such as the country’s relationship with Cyprus, its lack of a truth and reconciliation commission with the Armenian Genocide, and other humanitarian issues have led to a clash with Western and Turkish communities in economic and political matters. Nevertheless, Turkey’s biggest trading partner is still Europe and its application to EU is still pending. The Middle East
Turkey’s liberalized market has attracted investors from the Middle East, and the country’s new aggressive stance on the Israeli-Palestinian issue has rebuilt the bridges burnt from WWI. With the coming of the Arab Spring, Turkey has been the most vocal to commend the nations who have broken away from their dictatorial regime as well as condemn nations like Libya and most recently Syria as the violence from the protesters continue. Turkey is proving that it can be a voice for regional conflicts by advocating peace and stability.Turkey still maintains its ambitious plans for entry into the EU; however, Turkey has made it very clear that it is pursuing its own foreign policy agenda and has put Turkey ahead of all of its foreign policy decisions.Points to Consider
-What is the regional response to Turkey’s stance on Middle East Issues? What about the responses from the international community?
-What drives Turkey’s desperation to be part of the EU
-What are the main points of contention between the West and Turkey?
-What is Turkey’s vision for the future, both economically and politically?
