We welcome submissions from all Boston University students! All submissions to The IRR should be sent to irr@buiaa.org for review.
Winter 2012 Submission Deadlines:
Submissions are now being accepted for our 2012 Winter Issue.
A successful submission of any type will have the following:
- Full name (how you want to be published)
- Class and year (ex: CAS ’10)
- Phone number (only to be used if there are issues with the piece)
- Your work attached (.doc, .rtf, or plain text only! – NO .docx)
- Subject line should be the following:
[IRR Winter 12 - Opinion, Jane Doe] substituting the appropriate sections.
Specific guidelines differ based on your content and purpose. Please read these rules carefully before submitting your work. An improperly written submission will not be accepted under any conditions.
Research & News pieces:
Your work shall always be factual and unbiased. Please keep your pieces focused on contemporary issues. Citations are the backbone of your article, and serve to prove your point. Use Chicago (end notes) format to cite your sources, with a full works cited section attached. If reporting news or conducting interviews, use AP format when appropriate.
- Suggested word count: 900-2500
Opinion pieces:
Your opinion is yours; it is entirely up to you to make a strong point. You absolutely must cite your claims when they aren’t your own. Facts are the backbone of your argument, and we will absolutely not tolerate unverifiable claims in your work. A good editorial or opinion piece is typically 75% facts, 25% interpretation. Use Chicago (end note) citations when you use them, and AP format if in doubt.
- Suggested word count: 1000
IRR Blog:
These shorter pieces are meant to be timely; reactions, opinions or thoughts on current topics or topics otherwise not discussed. They can also be reactions to Weekly Meeting Discussions. This is a great way to get your voice heard in a more casual manner than the print IRR issues. If you have any pictures you would like posted with your post, send them along!
- Suggested word count: 500-100
Letters to the Editor:
Guidelines are the same as opinion pieces, but you should be much more concise. No rants without facts, please.
- Maximum word count: 500
Photographs:
We are always looking for new and interesting photos from all sources! Whether it is from your time studying abroad, a model UN conference you attended, or an interesting flag you found downtown, we are searching for the best in all photos that just seem to say “international affairs.” Use past issues to get a feel for what we like.
Please send in a full-size photo with a complete caption, including the location and subject of the picture, to the submissions email address at any time.
If you have any questions, feel free to email the Editor-in-Chief directly at irr@buiaa.org with any concerns. Thanks for reading, and good luck!
